Some 1,200m above sea level in the Vietnam Central Highlands, there is a new eco-tourism site offering gorgeous natural scenery and an idyllic environment. Known as Mang Den, its name is a transliteration into Vietnamese from its name in the local minority Mo Nam language, T’Mang Deeng. “T’Mang” means place or region, and “Deeng” means vast and flat, thus the name simply means a vast and flat area. Mang Den is located in what is now Kon Plong District of Kon Tum Province and, with its lakes, waterfalls, pine-clad hills and cool climate, is considered by many as a second Dalat, although it is not nearly as well known or well travelled as the Central Highlands city of flowers.
The climate in Mang Den is breezy and cool all year round, and vast expanses of primitive forest provide stellar scenery. The strong cultural traditions of local people only add to the attractiveness of the area, and the future of eco-tourism here is bright. The Vietnamese government has approved the development of Mang Den into national eco-tourism destination.
Already, attention is being paid to maintaining the environment during the development of an urban centre to provide tourism services. Kon Plong District is newly formed and, fortunately, is being planned well, with low construction density and evenly distributed population. In this way, the new urban area can be developed with a light footprint on the surrounding natural systems.
The planners aim to build Mang Den into a multifunctional eco-tourism urban area with buildings and infrastructure covering only 10 to 20% of land area, leaving most land as green space or covered with trees, and providing convenient and quality services. Protection of the environment is given highest priority during the construction of the urban area.
Thus, in the near future, Mang Den will be able to provide all services and will be a fully fledged eco-tourism destination for those interested in experiencing the Vietnam Central Highlands off the beaten trail to Dalat. You and your family will have the chance to relax and enjoy the truly natural setting, quiet atmosphere and good service. A tour to Mang Den is well worth investigating.
