Traditionally, the summer in Vietnam used to be regarded as the 'low season' for tourism. This was because many potential travellers were put off because July and August are the monsoon months.

However, in recent years, tourists have realised that the central coastal area of Vietnam is at its best weatherwise - blue skies, lower humidity and gentle onshore breezes.

We recommend Central Vietnam for a beach holiday. It's a succession of magnificentThe Evason Hideaway is the last word in eco-friendly luxury coral sand beaches ranging from busy seaside resorts to deserted hideaways and idyllic tropical islands.

Accommodation in Central Vietnam is also varied. If you want to escape the crowds completely, you can choose from ultra-luxury in the new Evason Hideaway to the minimalist Jungle Beach Resort, with plenty of alternatives in between.

If you're more gregarious, Nha Trang or the more laid-back Mui Ne Beach might be just right for you. Other seaside resort hotels range from the top-notch Furama in Danang to the good-value Yasaka overlooking Nha Trang's six kilometre beach.

The Jungle Beach Resort is low on facilities, but sky-high for relaxed seclusion

If you want to see more of Vietnam, you'll need to take the weather into account. During the summer, heavy rain affects the north and south of Vietnam. However, it's not an Indian-style monsoon where it pours down continuously. Typically, clouds appear quite suddenly, a strong breeze springs up, the sky darkens, and the rain pours down for about twenty minutes leaving the air cool and fresh.

Half an hour later, the clouds disappear, the sun returns and the temperature rises again.

This happens about once a day on average at the peak of the monsoon, so there's plenty of time to explore other places in the country. Of course, it gets very humid, but as you'll always have air-conditioned accommodation and vehicles, it shouldn't be a problem.
