Saigon Can Tho Hotel***

Our brief comments:
The Saigon Can Tho Hotel is located in the heart of the city centre, within walking distance of Can Tho Market and Ninh Kieu Quay. For many years, it was the only 'international' hotel in Can Tho town, but the arrival of the upmarket Victoria in 1998, and the upstart Golf hotel in 2003 has left the Saigon Can Tho in the dust.

Today's Can Tho is booming. It's unofficial title of capital of the Mekong was confirmed when it was made a city a couple of years ago, and investment and new arrivals are pouring in. Consequently, the Saigon Can Tho is beginning to look like a hangover from the past.

That said, it's still able to provide decent accommodation at a reasonable price. It also offers a more Vietnamese experience that its newer competitors.

Rooks are comfortable and reasonably equipped with the usual facilities - in-house movies, newspapers and a fruit basket are good value-added extras.

The Hoang Cung Restaurant offers both Western and Asia cuisines, and the Song Que Restaurant specialises in the traditional food of Mekong Delta.

The hotel's description of the Thuong Uyen Bar as 'a wonderful place to relax and unwind' is muted by the inclusion of a karaoke - it's an aspect of Vietnam's culture that seldom appeals to non-Asian travellers.

There are a few 'recreational' opportunities such as billiards, darts and table tennis, and a fitness centre complete with sauna, steam bath, Jacuzzi and the inevitable massage centre.

For travellers who are au fait and comfortable with the dated institutional appearance of the hotel and a less international ambiance, the Saigon Can Tho offers decent accommodation and friendly service at an affordable price.
