Golf Hotel ****

Our brief comments: The Can Tho Golf opened in 2003. It's is a conventional ten-story 'block' hotel on the banks of the Hau River, a short distance from Ben Thu tourist wharf in the city centre. The name is misleading - the nearest golf is on the outskirts of Saigon.

Even though it does not have a golf course, it offers a good range of facilities and has excellent views of the river. Rooms are comfortable, with good bathrooms. Don't expect much in the way of local or Vietnamese culture though, the hotel is standard international style.

Unusually, the higher floors are reserved for dining and other facilities. The Bellevue and Golf Can Tho Restaurants serve Asian and Western cuisines in buffet format, but there's an à la carte menu as well. Our clients often say good things about the hotel's breakfast - good variety and well-prepared.

The Windy Restaurant, situated on the 8th floor overlooking Hau River, is an open air restaurant, and the romantically-named Moonflow Café is decorated with plants and flowers. There's also an entertainment and cocktail bar called somewhat more prosaically 'The Friendship Club'.

You'd probably want to give the six karaoke rooms a miss, and possibly the Golf Dancing Club, but there's a decent fitness centre with saunas, steam bats and the usual body massage, and the largish pool has a Jacuzzi.

It's all a bit bland, but discounting the nearby Victoria, it's the best of the Can Tho bunch.
