Our brief comments:
The main attraction of the Kim Do Hotel is its convenient location at the heart of District 1, a few minutes walk to the Opera House, Dong Khoi Street and the Saigon River. In general, it’s a comfortable establishment with appropriate range of fittings, but maintenance may be an issue.
The hotel was renovated a few years ago, and emerged much improved - the reception area is spacious and the coffee/snack area is a welcome innovation. Unfortunately an ugly suite of ‘natural’ wooden furniture in the lobby was retained - it's completely out of keeping with the rest of the lobby decor and spoils the effect of what is otherwise a well-designed area.
Apart from the Superior rooms, floor areas and facilities are adequate for a city hotel, and the room was generally well laid out. The heavy wooden furniture was robust and attractive, but is beginning to show its age. The bed was hard, but comfortable, and the bed linen was very good. The bathrooms in most rooms were small, but adequate.
A major concern was the poor maintenance of the room in which we stayed. The lighting switches didn’t work properly, and bare wires were protruding from one socket. Only one of the switches on the control panel was active, and the shower didn't work.
Breakfast was a high point - a good selection of buffet dishes, and tables laid out well. The food was well cooked, varied, and entirely appropriate for an international clientele. Juices, cereals and other elements were replenished regularly.
In general, service was patchy. The porters and restaurant staff were excellent – helpful, obliging and smiling. In general, reception staff members were good, but somewhat inefficient. A few were downright rude.
Recent feedback from guests suggests that standards have dropped since our visit. One of our guests commented that the as the hotel has expanded, the personal attention has declined.
We will be following-up the situation later this year.
