Saigon Morin Hotel****
Our brief comments:
The three-story Saigon Morin, named after one of its early owners who made it a centre for the French community, was built in 1901. Witness to more than its fair share of history over the years, the hotel came to prominence in February 1968 during the famous 'Tet Offensive', when 10,000 North Vietnamese troops stormed Hue and held it for four weeks through some of the worst fighting of the war.
At that time, the Morin Hotel housed Hue University, close to the US military command centre. The Morin was seized during the first onslaught. Eventually, US soldiers re-took the building room by room in a bitter guerilla battle, after which it was transformed into a fortified command post as US troops slowly regained control of the city.
Today, the Morin is owned by the Saigon Tourism company (hence the prefix), and the scars of history have long faded. With one of the best locations in the city, the hotel offers views of the Perfume River, and is within easy walking distance of the Trang Tien Bridge and nearly everything else worth seeing in Hue.
Its 180 rooms and suites, brimming with colonial charm and old-world ambiance, are spacious and well-equipped, with fixtures and fittings of good quality. A particularly attractive feature is a large tropical garden and swimming pool in the central courtyard.
‘Le Rendez-vous’ serves a commendable buffet breakfast, has a daily menu of both Asian and Western dishes, and frequently offers barbeque dinners perfect for its relaxed, outdoor seating in the courtyard. ‘Jules Ferry’ restaurant offers a more traditional dining atmosphere under crystal chandeliers.
If it’s an imperial feast you’re looking for, ‘Le Royal’ can arrange the full spread, replete with traditional Hue music and royal rites recalling Hue’s heyday as capital of the Nguyen Dynasty. Meanwhile, the 3rd floor ‘Le Panorama’ bar features more contemporary live music performances, cocktails and river views.
The hotel is well-managed, and the service is worthy of a five-star rating. Feedback from our customers is nearly always positive.
