Morin Hotel - Bach Ma (local standard)

Our brief comments:
One of the rebuilt villas on the mountain slopesWhat is now Bach Ma National Park was originally 'discovered' by the French, who turned the upper levels of a mountain into a resort of well over a hundred villas during the 1930s. It was abandoned in the fifties, but much of the infrastructure survives, and a few of the ruined villas have been restored to provide accommodation for visitors.

Views from the summit of the mountain are superb.

Bach Ma is one of the best-managed National Parks in Vietnam, but unfortunately the quality does not extend to its accommodation and catering. Three large villas are A basic roomgrouped on the upper slopes of the mountain together with a Vietnamese restaurant. The villa rooms are mostly dormitories, apparently for large groups. Furniture is minimal and most rooms lack en-suite facilities. There is hot water for showering, but no telephones or baths.

The restaurant serves very basic Vietnamese food.

Closer to the summit, the 'Morin Hotel' has conventional rooms with en-suite shower rooms and flush toilets. There is a small There are spectacular views from the summit of the mountainrestaurant on the ground floor where a very limited menu of basic food is served.

Cooking, cleaning and other services are supplied by forest rangers. As they have little experience and minimal knowledge of looking after a 'hotel', the food is just about edible, and service almost non-existent.

All accommodation was poorly maintained and cleaning standards were low. TheThe Saola - a critically endangered species discovered in Bach Ma, one of only three large mammal species discovered in the 20th century feeling of neglect was heightened by a pervasive dampness in the bedrooms, the result of frequent rain and very high humidity for much of the year.

The National Park is well worth a visit if you're a nature lover. However, unless you're prepared to 'rough it', you'd probably find a day trip from Hue or, better still, Lang Co Beach Resort near the National Park, is the best way to experience Bach Ma.
