Sunny Hotel***
Our brief comments:
The ten-storey Sunny is located on a corner plot on a busy road outside the city centre, but within easy reach of the Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter of Hanoi, West Lake and the Citadel/Mausoleum area, each about a five-minute drive from the hotel.
It's a very recent addition to Hanoi's hotels which accounts for a rather variable standard of service and accommodation. However, the staff are very willing and eager to please. Recent feedback suggests a problem with traffic noise. If you travel with Haivenu, we'll request a room on the higher floors.
The lobby and reception area is open, well-designed and equipped with comfortable furniture. An adjacent coffee shop is in the latter stages of completion.
In general, rooms are a good size, and well equipped. Beds are firm and comfortable, furniture is good quality and functional, and all rooms have Internet connection points with free access to the Internet for guests with personal laptops.
The colour scheme is rather bland, but unobtrusive. Some fittings, such as the wardrobes, are somewhat flimsy and are unlikely to survive the passing of time.
Executive rooms are spacious, suites more so, but all rooms have identical small bathrooms, entirely acceptable at Deluxe standard and prices, but less so in Executive rooms and particularly in Suites.
The views from the higher floors have either good south-east views overlooking the Citadel and the central commercial area of the city or the linked Truc Bach and West lakes to the north-east.
Unfortunately, a large tower block is under construction a couple of hundred metres from the hotel, diminishing the impact of the lake views.
There are two lifts to the ninth floor, where a massage/sauna/Jacuzzi complex has recently been completed. A flight of stairs leads to the 'Sky View' restaurant. It's well laid-out, with plenty of room and east-facing panoramic views.
At present, the Sunny is feeling its way, but the few discrepancies are outweighed by a reasonable pricing structure.
However, the enthusiasm and friendliness of the staff and their desire to make the hotel a success suggests that it is a welcome newcomer with a bright future.
