Quoc Hoa Hotel***
Our brief comments:
Built in 1991, and re-opened after a complete remodelling in November, 2005, the Quoc Hoa is one of only two international hotels in the Old Quarter. It's located on one of the '36 Streets' of Hanoi's ancient commercial centre, about a ten-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake.
The lobby is divided in two. On the right is Reception, and on the left is a small clothes and souvenirs boutique. Behind them is a small bar, a decent business centre and a lift.
On the upper floors, corridors are light and airy with good carpets.
Superior rooms are average size, but careful layout makes them look larger. The dark wood furniture and fittings, bed linen and soft furnishings are carefully coordinated and good quality.
The Asian-style bed frames, bedlinen and mattresses are good quality. Single beds are large - two side by side make a double larger than Kingsize. The bathroom is standard, but above average. There's a window, but the view is fully obscured by the next door property a few metres away.
Deluxe rooms are similar, but larger and with the addition of a sofa and a partial street view. Family rooms are a larger version of Deluxe with a double and single bed.
Suite rooms are stylish, with a well chosen coffee, chocolate and white colour scheme.
The Junior Suite on the fifth floor is a good size and has good city views from and attractive balcony with a table and chairs and higher quality fixtures and fittings with the addition of a small vanity table in an alcove. The bathroom is also proportionately larger.
The top price Senior Suite is adjacent and identical to the Junior apart from the addition of a four poster bed and a shower separated from the bath in a good cubicle.
The single restaurant on the sixth floor offers a wider view from a larger balcony and a very short menu of good international dishes - prices are above average. There's a stock wine list featuring a few French and New World options, good but expensive.
On the top floor there's a unisex wet and dry sauna, and a large Jacuzzi. In the front area is a disappointing 'fitness room' currently with a few machines - the rest of the room used as a furniture store. The views over the city are good, though.
Haivenu customers staying at Deluxe standard and above will benefit from fruit and flowers in the room.
The Quoc Hoa is a welcome arrival. It's location in the heart of one of Hanoi's best attractions and its good accommodation makes it worth serious consideration. The hotel's star rating is limited by its size, not its quality - we rate it higher than three star.
