Meliá Hotel*****
Our brief comments:
The 22-storey Meliá belongs to the worldwide and respected Spanish 'Sol' chain, and is located in a tree-lined boulevard about a fifteen-minute walk from Hoan Kiem lake. Its external appearance is off-putting - a featureless tower block. However, the interior more than compensates.
The entrance lobby and reception area is spacious, designed for efficiency rather than grandiosity. To the left is the hotel's Lobby Lounge and the hotel's international restaurant, the El Patio. An escalator provides access to an extensive first floor conference and ballroom area.
Also on the first floor is the El Oriental restaurant specialising in Vietnamese seafood, and seven private dining rooms on the floor above. In addition, the Meliá has a well-equipped fitness room and an outdoor swimming pool.
Six lifts lead to the upper floors and the impressive guest rooms. There are two main categories, Deluxe and Suite. All rooms are designed with the needs of the customers in mind.
Apart from the usual features to be expected in a five-star establishment, each room has a large working desk with an executive chair, and a dedicated power point and broadband outlet.
Tall panoramic windows provide excellent views, especially on the higher floors - those in suite rooms widen the vista to cover almost two-thirds of the city.
Decor throughout is carefully designed with understated Spanish motifs in keeping with the hotel's origins.
Deluxe bathrooms are comparatively small, albeit well equipped. Suites have a separate shower cubicle and more space. The Grand Suite lives up to its name!
Although not included on the table below, there is also a Presidential Suite with a floor area of 165m2 and a rooftop helicopter landing pad.
Executive level rooms have signficant benefits described below.
A new 'Latino Bar' is scheduled to open towards the end of 2005 on the third floor, next to the Fitness Centre
Although slightly outside the heart of the city, the Meliá offers comfortable accommodation, above average facilities and excellent views of the city.
Inspected February 2005
