Fortuna Hotel****
Our brief comments: 
The seventeen-storey Fortuna Hotel opened in 1999 on one of Hanoi's main thoroughfares about 5km from the city centre. It's very popular with Asian customers who make up about 90% of its customers. A partial renovation is underway, and will add a further 20 rooms taking the total to 206.
The Fortuna is located on one of Hanoi's busiest thoroughfares, about a fifteen-minute drive from the city  centre. It also incorporates a large office complex within the main building, but it is completely separate from the accommodation section.
The foyer and reception areas are spacious and well arranged. At the time of inspection, it was decorated to celebrate Tet, the Vietnamese New Year festival, the centrepiece of which was two large Japanese-style mannequins.
 To the right of the foyer, a large lounge bar included a range of tempting patisserie as well as the usual range of refreshments.
The hotel's rooms are a decent size and have a good range of facilities with extra touches for business travellers - some have connecting rooms for families. The beds are comfortable, and the colour scheme is quietly relaxing.
Bathrooms are unexceptional in most rooms, but those in the suites have an unusual  combined toilet, bath and shower cubicle separate from the rest of the bathroom. Suites also have roomy walk-in wardrobes, plenty of room and upgraded facilities.
There is a comprehensive fitness room on the top floor offering good views while you exercise.
There's also a comprehensive range of hotel facilities, but for Europeans, a slot machine arcade and a 24-lane international standard bowling alley are dubious additional benefits, especially when the hotel lacks a swimming pool.
