Van Hai Hotel***
Our brief comments:
The original Van Hai is a basic Vietnamese hotel overlooking the bay about a kilometre from Bai Chay beach. It's definitely showing its age: there's a fin de siecle feel about the place. Furnishings are flimsy, and public areas shabby. All rooms in this section are standard, very small (14m2), and lack both a bath and a decent view! Even though they're cheap, they're not good value for money, so we haven't included details of the old building in the tables below.
Things are better in the newer eleven-storey building tower that has sprung up beside the old building. Although rooms are still on the small side, they are better appointed and all have views of the bay.
Furniture is functional rather than stylish with a proliferation of shiny tiled floors in rooms and public areas (the suite has a carpeted floor), and aluminium-framed windows. Four restaurants serve a selection of Vietnamese, Western and Chinese dishes.
There are few additional facilities, no pool or recreational amenities, but good views of the bay partly compensate.
