Thang Long Hotel***
Our brief comments:
 The Thanh Long was built during 2003 and opened in the following year. It's on three levels: two wings, one four-storey and the other five, on the sides of a central seven-storey tower. Although it's located some way from the centre of the Bai Chay tourist area of Ha Long City, it overlooks the main tourist wharf for the bay and is therefore convenient for independent travellers.
The hotel is fresh and clean but quite basic. Unfortunately, the area in front of the hotel is a large, unattractive concrete coach/car parking area. Rooms are a reasonable size with all the standard facilities. Unusually, they are categorised by the beds they contain. The VIP rooms are larger, with armchairs and a coffee table, but a standard bathroom.
The restaurant is light and airy, but furnishings and the menu are poor quality.
We visited the hotel shortly after it had opened for business. The pool was still under construction at the time, and the smoking policy had not been decided.
