Mithrin Hotel****
Our brief comments:
 The twelve-storey Mithrin Hotel, managed by Swiss-Belhotel International, is a recent addition to Ha Long Bay's hotels. It's located about 5km from the centre of the Bai Chay tourist area of Ha Long City on a large area of reclaimed land zoned for residential and hotel development.
At present, much of the reclaimed area consists of empty plots, so most rooms have good views of the bay. As the Mithrin is about 500m inland from  the new shoreline, further development may obscure bay views from its lower floors.
After its indifferent external architecture and lack of vegetation around the building, the interior is a pleasant surprise. The reception area is quite grand, albeit rather empty, with a wide staircase sweeping up to a mezzanine floor.
The 88 rooms are functional rather than cosy, but are a good size and well appointed. Deluxe rooms have a corner bath, and suite rooms have a bath with a separate spa shower cubicle.
 An attractive restaurant and a bistro adjacent to the lobby cover the range of Vietnamese, Asian and international cuisines, and a cafe on the top floor provides snacks, performances and fashion shows, and a superb view of the bay.
Karaoke rooms are mercifully soundproofed. The fitness room is small, but is compensated by a sauna, steam room and two Jacuzzi (all unisex - very rare in Vietnam!).
The Mithrin is a welcome newcomer on the Ha Long Bay scene. The new competition, and the rapidly growing number of visitors choosing to spend the night in a boat on the bay rather than in a hotel, should help with driving up standards in the area.
